Warm air, strange smells, noise, or no cooling at all — Radman Auto Repair has been Etobicoke's trusted diagnostic specialist since 1999. This page is the hub of Radman's full Car AC & HVAC diagnostic cluster — find the real problem before recommending any repair.

Car AC Problems: Every Symptom Explained

Car air conditioning problems show up in many ways — not just warm air. Ontario's road conditions, humidity, and temperature swings create a specific pattern of AC failures that Radman has been diagnosing since 1999. Each symptom below points to a different set of likely causes.

AC Blowing Warm Air

The most common complaint. Causes include refrigerant loss from a leak, a failed compressor, a restricted TXV, a damaged condenser, or an HVAC control fault. A refrigerant recharge without finding the leak is a temporary fix.

AC Cold Then Warm (Intermittent)

AC that cools for 10–20 minutes then blows warm. Common causes: TXV sticking closed, moisture freezing the expansion valve, or a compressor clutch cycling fault. See Intermittent AC Diagnosis.

AC Only Works on the Highway

AC cools at speed but fails at idle. Typically a weak condenser fan — without airflow the condenser can't release heat and the compressor cuts out.

AC Not Working At All

No cold air at any setting. Could be a completely failed compressor, a severely low refrigerant charge, an electrical fault, or a seized compressor clutch.

AC Smells Musty or Mouldy

Usually mould or bacteria growth on the evaporator core. Not a refrigerant or mechanical problem — needs treatment and a filter change.

Warm Air From One Side Only

Rarely a refrigerant problem — almost always a blend door actuator fault or a stuck blend door in the HVAC system.

How Radman Diagnoses Car AC Problems

Warm air is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Radman's approach is to test the full AC system before recommending any parts — pressure test with dry nitrogen, manifold gauge testing, electronic leak detection, compressor function testing, electrical circuit check, condenser and airflow inspection, and HVAC control/blend door testing, in that order.

Radman's rule on recharges: We do not recharge a system that has a leak — it's the law. Refrigerant loss means something failed. Adding refrigerant without fixing the leak returns the car to the same failure within weeks or one season. We find the leak, repair it, then recharge — so the fix lasts. This is also why Radman doesn't recommend off-the-shelf DIY recharge cans — many sold in Canada contain hydrocarbon refrigerant instead of what your vehicle actually needs, and most don't include the oil your compressor depends on.

Car AC System Components — What Each Part Does and How It Fails

AC Compressor

The pump that pressurizes refrigerant. Failure modes: clutch not engaging (electrical), bearing wear (noise), internal piston/valve failure (no pressure build). See Compressor Failure.

Condenser

Mounted in front of the radiator. Failure modes: physical damage, salt corrosion, or fins clogged with debris.

Evaporator

Inside the dashboard, where refrigerant absorbs cabin heat. Failure modes: corrosion leak, blockage, or mould growth.

TXV — Thermostatic Expansion Valve

Meters refrigerant flow into the evaporator. Frequently misdiagnosed as compressor failure. See TXV page.

AC Lines and Hoses

In Ontario vehicles, rusted or corroded AC lines are the single most common cause of refrigerant loss. See AC Line Repair.

Blend Door Actuator

Controls the mix of hot and cold air. When it fails, the AC system itself is often fine but the wrong temperature blows regardless of setting.

R134a vs R1234yf — Which Refrigerant Does Your Car Use?

Most vehicles built before 2015 use R134a refrigerant. Most vehicles built after 2017 use R1234yf. Many 2015–2017 vehicles could be either — check your underhood label or ask Radman.

R134a

Used in most vehicles built 1994–2016. Widely available refrigerant, lower cost per fill, standard equipment at most shops. Being phased out on new vehicles. See R-134a Recharge Cans in Canada if you're considering an off-the-shelf can.

R1234yf

Standard on most vehicles built 2017 and later. Requires dedicated equipment, costs approximately 4–5× R134a per fill. Cannot be mixed with R134a. See R-1234yf Recharge Cans in Canada if you're considering an off-the-shelf can.

Important: Some shops still do not have R1234yf equipment. Cross contaminating refrigerant types causes compressor and system damage. Radman services both systems with the correct dedicated equipment.

Why Ontario Vehicles Have More AC Problems

Road Salt and AC Line Corrosion — Ontario uses more road salt per kilometre than almost anywhere in North America. See AC Line Repair & Fabrication.

Winter Storage and Compressor Seals — AC systems may sit unused for 5–6 months each winter. Compressor shaft seals can dry out and develop a slow leak.

Humidity and Evaporator Mould — Toronto's summer humidity creates ideal mould conditions on evaporator cores.

Seasonal Temperature Extremes — Stress cycles every rubber hose, seal, and fitting in the AC system.

Car AC Repair Cost in Etobicoke & Toronto

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my car AC blowing warm air?

Warm air typically means the system is not managing pressure or heat exchange correctly. The most common causes in Ontario vehicles are refrigerant loss from a corroded line, a failed or weak compressor, a restricted TXV valve, a damaged condenser, or an electrical fault. Located at 321 Rexdale Blvd #4, Etobicoke.

Can I just recharge my AC instead of fixing it?

A recharge is appropriate when the system has no leak and is slightly low after years of normal permeation. If the system lost refrigerant noticeably, there is a leak, and a recharge without fixing it will fail again within weeks to one season. If you're considering an off-the-shelf recharge can instead of a shop visit, see our DIY A/C recharge cans page first — most contain hydrocarbon refrigerant and no oil charge.

How much does car AC repair cost in Toronto or Etobicoke?

Depends entirely on the failed component — from $150 for a recharge to $1,500+ for a compressor. The diagnosis is the only way to give an accurate quote. Call (416) 742-4521.

What is R1234yf and does my car use it?

The newer refrigerant used in most vehicles built after 2017. Requires dedicated service equipment — cannot be mixed with R134a. Check the underhood label or call Radman.

Why does my car AC smell musty or mouldy?

Almost always mould or bacteria growing on the evaporator core — a hygiene issue, not refrigerant or mechanical. The fix involves treating the evaporator, replacing the cabin air filter, and clearing the condensate drain.

Is it worth fixing AC on an older vehicle?

Depends on what failed. A rusted AC line repair on an otherwise sound vehicle is usually worth it. A compressor plus evaporator plus condenser on the same vehicle may not be. See our repair or replace guide.

I cannot say enough good things about Livio and the team at Radman Auto Repair in Rexdale. We brought in my son’s 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer because the A/C was malfunctioning. We had already been to two other shops, paid for diagnostics, and received different explanations, so we were frustrated and unsure what to do next. Livio was outstanding. He listened carefully, looked at the issue, and explained everything clearly and in detail in a way that actually made sense. He was able to narrow down what was going on within minutes, without guessing, pressure, or recommending unnecessary work. What really stood out was that he did not charge us another diagnostic fee after learning we had already paid for two separate diagnoses. Even better, the work was completed the same day, which was a huge relief. It is rare to find a mechanic who is knowledgeable, honest, patient, efficient, and genuinely focused on helping customers understand the real issue before they spend money on repairs. Livio truly gets it. We are so happy we found Radman Auto Repair and would highly recommend Livio and his team to anyone looking for trustworthy, skilled, and customer-focused service..

My 2015 Honda CR-V was blowing hot air and making noise when the A/C was on. The Compressor and Expansion valve needed replacement due to metal debris in the system. I rarely write reviews, but I felt it would be wrong not to appreciate Radman for their service, especially after what I went through before finding them. I’m writing this one month after the repair because I wanted to test my A/C on multiple long trips before recommending them. One thing I learned from this experience is that many mechanics know how to replace parts, but very *few follow the right procedures* and perform the proper checks. I initially went for a cheaper repair at a local mechanic. The problem came back, and afterward he didn’t seem to know what to do next. I found Radman through Google reviews without any personal recommendation, so I was taking a chance. They properly diagnosed the issue, explained everything clearly before starting the work, didn’t exaggerate the problem, and charged me a reasonable price. A/C issues can be complicated but they answered all my questions and I honestly haven’t had such a good and detailed conversation with a mechanic in the GTA about an A/C problem. Their knowledge and experience with A/C systems really stood out. I also had a catalytic converter issue. Another mechanic simply recommended replacing it, which would have cost at least $2,000. Radman explained that considering the age and condition of my 2015 CR-V, such an expensive replacement might not make sense. They gave me the replacement cost but also suggested trying Cataclean first. I tried it, and so far I haven’t had any issues. After a month and several long trips, my A/C is still working well. It’s rare to find this combination of knowledge, transparency, and honesty. Thank you, Radman, for the knowledgeable and honest service. I genuinely appreciate it.
